How the tool was implemented
During recent research into the FBO resposne to HIV in India, I came across an interesting and worrying trend. Whilst my research was focussed on an infectious disease I became aware that Indian FBOs were facing an internal threat not from HIV, or TB but from Type 2 Diabetes. I interviewed over 30 leaders of FBO health and HIV programs and there were three recurring themes: 1) They were trained at Christian Medical College Vellore 2) They were often from South India 3) They had developed Diabetes Mellitus! It seemed that the higher up one was in FBO leadership the higher was the chance of diabetes. I would be interested to hear your ideas as to why theree is such a high prevalence amongst FBO leaders? I don't think it was from attending one of India's leading medical colleges!
What we learned
I pose that perhaps it is an occupational hazard of being an FBO leader. A leader in Indian society is treated with respect. With respect comes much food, sugary Chai, and sweet biscuits on every visitation and occasion. Many FBO leaders attend a variety of such occasions every day and Indian culture demands that one must eat what one is given by the host. Is this diet and lack of exercise causing an epidemic amongst our Indian FBO leaders. Indeed in India the Adult prevalence of Diabetes is estimated to rise to 16% by 2025. It is currently around 7%. What is the present and estimated prevalence amongst FBO leaders?
Convener's Comment
Dr Grills identifies a significant problem here - cardiovascular disease and diabetes are key issues for Asians living in the West... and they are increasing in Asia too. If you have a comment about this issue - please add it to the discussion forum on the topic. Thanks.
